Chapter Sixteen
They led. We followed. Welcome silence stifled the narrow streets. Entering a ransacked pharmacy, the click of a gun and several hushed commands broke the quiet. Our guide froze and said, âItâs me. Kyle. I foundââ
âSigrÃð.â A cough. âLet her in.â
Bodies parted. They smelled sour and sweet. Pungent after weeks of travel. The sickness of one rose above the rest. Bitter. Vile. Rotten. Someone was dying.
Kyle led me past their comrades. Sprawled across the counter lay a tired blond whose chest heaved with every breath.
I almost smiled. âI thought you were dead. When I returned to camp it was wrecked.â
âNot yet.â She offered me a weak grin before glancing passed me. âTeagan, still following her around I see.â
Teagan took Leslieâs hand. âCan you blame me?â
âHow are you?â I asked and pushed a pleasant look onto my face, knowing full well she was dying. Necrosis had set it. Only a staff of doctors could save her now. A hard thing to find.
âIâve been better. Thereâs a whole group of us. We heard about you, a deadly and ruthless vampire who left behind a lot of dead vampires, but rarely a dead human.â
âRed handed. Why are you here?â
âLooking for you. Iâve met someone. A lieutenant named Oriel. We have a son. Oriel leads the rebellion. Leagues of humans and shifters have come together. We want to join you.â She groaned and clutched at her shoulder. âItâs been difficult to establish an alliance with any vampires.â
âYou need to get back to your family,â I told her.
She nodded and winced. âAs soon as I can get my feet under me.â Smiling, she let out a chuckle.
We all knew she had little time left.
âIâm heading to the new Kingâs party. The plan is to infiltrate.â
âIâll make sure to get word back to him. Promise me youâll find Oriel after.â
Taking her hand, I squeezed it and answered the question she wouldnât ask. âIâll protect your family.â
A tear slipped down her cheek and she glanced away. âGo now. Donât be late to your party.â
âOf course. It was good seeing you, Leslie.â
She took my hand in hers. âStay alive, Sig.â She said, pressing a crumpled piece of paper into my hand.
I turned and headed back into the street. Smoothing out the paper, I studied the ad for late night pizza in the faraway town of Yuma, Arizona. Iâd have to go there and find the family sheâd be leaving behind.
Todayâs loss would be added to the list that would stay with me forever. Thereâd been many close calls in my life. Most from when Iâd been alive. A few from after Iâd died that fateful night. It haunted my dreams. Raging like wildfire over my memories. A dark night. Turbulent sea. The screams of the dying. Salt stung my eyes and wounds. Each cut flaring to life as I bobbed and weaved between the blades and hands that wished me dead.
Teaganâs worry flooded the street as he stepped into the night behind me. Heâd fed. His breath reeked of it.
